sabien short story 1

The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe

1 This story is about two men at a party named Fortunato and Montresor. Montresor is seeking revenge because Fortunato disrespected him. The two men met at the carnival and Montresor seen his friend who was dressed like a clown and a hat with bells on his head and they engaged in a conversation. In this conversation he told Fortunato that he had some amontillado witch is a fine wine and that he was going to let Luchesi who is another friend of theirs test the wine but Fortunato told him that Luchesi didn’t no more about wine then him so Montresor took Fortunato.
So they went on to go get the wine and along the way Montresor tried to get Fortunato to turn around because he noticed that he had a bad cough but because he wanted to get to the wine so bad he insisted that they keep going so they proceeded on their journey. And later on in the story Montresor chained his friend and built a wall around him and left him their to die.
This is an ok story it takes a minute to get into it but when you do it’s alright. They us a lot of crazy words and in the end it gets a little confusing but I would recommend this book to a friend to do their report on and I don’t think that I would read this story again. The way that Montresor got his revenge back was pretty cool the way he put him and chained him up and built a wall around him. It never really said what Fortunato did to disrespect his friend and make him so mad to do a thing like that to him but it had to of been something bad.
If this book was made into a movie I believe that it would be good it would have alot of drama and suspense. If they through in a few big name actors it might be a hit. The only thing missing from the book is some more action like more fighting or they need to get chased by a moster or something but in the end its an ok book.

2 Fortunato was so happy that his friend had some amontillado that he did not realize that he was getting sat up and that his friend was going to kill him. Montresor must have had planned this out for a long time because he new exactly what to do. The story doesn’t really let you chose who side you should be on Montresor or Fortunato because it doesn’t tell what he did so you don’t know if Montresor had a good enough reason to kill his friend.

3 I believe that Montresor was a man that got picked on a lot and never did anything about it. Because when you first start reading the story he says “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could. And I believe that Fortunato is a person that says what he feels and is a drunk because in the story he is extremely happy that his friend has some wine and that was all he could think about.

4 Metaphor- Figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things, in which one thing becomes another thing without the use of the words like as, than, or resembles.

Personification- Special kind of metaphor in which a nonhuman thing or quality is talked about as if it were human.

Allusion- Reference to a statement, a person place or an event from literature, history, religion, myth, politics, sports, science or pop culture.

Irony- Contrast or discrepancy between expectation and reality- between what is said and what is really meant, between what is expected to happen and what really does happen’ or between what appears to be true and what is really true.

Simile- Figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things, using a word such as like, as, resembles, or than.

5 Fortunato is an example of irony because of his name you would think he is fortunate but he really isn't.
